Question 1 of 6
What you're being matched to
Ten small square board books, one topic each: animals, the ocean, numbers, colors, jobs, opposites, vehicles, shapes, the farm and fruit. Every spread has one big word beside the one picture it names, one short line for you to read out, and something to do with their hands — a flap to lift, a slider to push, a tab to pull — all die-cut from board, not paper. Thick laminated pages with rounded corners, and a rigid lidded box they go back into.
How the five minutes go, whichever book it is
- One book, one sitting. Five minutes is plenty. Twice a day beats once for twenty.
- Say the word on its own. "Banana." Point. Say it again, slower. Let them watch your mouth.
- Then let them open it. The reveal is the reward for the word, so it comes after.
- Wait longer than feels natural. Four or five seconds of quiet is where a reply has room to happen.
- Do the same page again. As many times as they ask. You will feel silly saying one word eight times in a row. Every parent does. That is the method, not you doing it wrong.
What parents say happens at the table
I felt ridiculous saying "banana, banana, banana" at the kitchen table. Then he said it back.
Megan R. — Verified BuyerShe brings me the zebra one. Pulls it out, pushes it back, looks at me, waits. We have done that page more times than I can count and I am not bored of it yet.
Danielle P. — mum of a 20 month oldOur picture books were too much for him and he would just close them. These he actually sits with, because there is only one word to deal with.

Quick questions
What if the quiz picks the wrong book?
Then open a different one. All ten come in the box. Hand them two and take whichever one they grab — that is also a valid method.
What age is it for?
Ages 1 to 3. Around one you lift and name while they grab for the flap. Around two they work every mechanism themselves. Around three you turn it round and let them tell you. Under 12 months, there is nothing here for them yet.
Will the flaps tear?
They are die-cut board, not paper: hinged flaps thick enough to stand open, sliders running in a track, pull-outs in a slot. The pages are thick enough that a one-year-old can turn them alone.
Is it for a speech delay?
It is a book set, not a therapy. One word, the pause, sounds before words — it is the kind of practice speech therapists describe, and it is still just a book. If you have questions about your child's speech, talk to your paediatrician. Do both.
Shipping and returns?
Free U.S. shipping, tracking by email, orders leave within a business day. The 30-day read-together promise: read one a day for a month, and if they are not bringing the books to you by then, email us and we refund it — opened, bent corners and all.
Straight talk: Little Lifters is a children's book set, not a medical, diagnostic or therapeutic product. The quiz is a way to pick a first book — it awards no prizes and makes no promises. Ages 1 and up, with a grown-up. Reviews reflect individual experiences.
